We offer a complete line of suspension services, including repairing, rebuilding, and revalving of shock absorbers, front forks, and steering dampers of all major manufacturers of motorcycle and car suspension. Use only steps 1, 9 and 10 for replacement of control arm and shaft assembly. Permits the removal of the top suspension nut by holding the strut piston, so it doesn't rotate while turning the nut. Place shock absorber flat on bench, remove filler plug, and add fluid to completely fill shock absorber, move arm up and down several times and recheck for complete filling, then install filler plug and gasket.
29: Start the re-assembly by installing the lower control arms first, then install the upper control arms and shims and torque the mounting bolts and nuts to specs on both control arms. Disconnect tie rod end ball joint (or unbolt steering arm on MGB). Fasten control arm securely in vise close to one end to prevent springing or distortion.
31: Install the spindle onto the lower control arm and tighten the nut. Removing the lower control arm 15mm pivot bolts can be difficult. Accessing the inner 18mm nut requires a shallow socket. Of course, a full rebuild of the wear parts of the suspension would get everything up to like-new tightness, with a complete PST suspension rebuild kit including ball joints, steering linkage, and factory-style lower control arm bushings.
Remember that there will be a lot of spring pressure on ‘A' arms, so be very, very careful when you remove these bolts and nuts. This is how all of the bushings can be removed once the sleeve is out. They are not vulcanized to the control arm or camber rod ends.
Here at Strutmasters we are The Suspension Experts®”, but you don't have to take our word for it. With backing from popular names like Lou Santiago from MuscleCar on Spike TV and Sam Memmolo from Shade Tree Mechanics and Two Guys Garage, you can be assured that our Mercury Cougar suspension parts are everything we guarantee them to be.
After the spring, I removed the tie-rod assembly. A vehicle with broken or worn coil springs can be driven, but the ride quality will be diminished, and, more importantly, the vehicle's handling will be compromised. Don't forget that a sagging rear spring can also cause a ride height change in the front of the car.
The coil springs hold the weight of the vehicle, and allow the wheels to travel vertically when the wheels encounter an obstacle. Loosening the top of a shock absorber on a MacPherson strut vehicle means breaking it free from the top of the strut tower. Now, using a large prybar between the K-member and lower control arm, prying in close to the inner pivot shaft, the whole lower control arm can be forced back taking the torsion bar back and out of its rear anchor.
This allows you to safely remove the spring bolt nut, then de-compress the spring easily. With all the angles created by the suspension traveling over the bumps and wheels steering to and fro, the axle must be as flexible as a gymnast while spinning like a whirling dervish.
After doing the same procedure on the other side, I then removed the rack & pinion steering (right). Step 6: Lower the control arm and remove the spring. B- an air impact wrench to loosen the large nut at the top of the strut or the piston rod. As you raise the jack, position the upper ball joint into the spindle.
On the plus side they last longer and are easier to install once the rubber bushings are removed. They wear as they rotate on the inner sleeve. When installed correctly, urethane bushings Suspension Disassembly allow unimpeded suspension travel. 13mm nuts hold the fuel tank crash protection retention straps. The 13mm nuts holding the anti-roll bar retainers are then removed.
